    It is highly opinionated piece. Very less information. The Centre for Social Studies (CSS) is an autonomous research institute devoted to social research. Founded as the Centre for Regional Development Studies by Prof. I.P. Desai in Surat in 1969, has been located on the campus of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University,Surat since 1980. Besides multi‑disciplinary research, the Centre has also been actively involved in guiding doctoral students, teaching, consultancy, training, as well as evaluation and monitoring of various development programmes. The Centre's faculty represents a variety of disciplines including Political Science, Sociology, Human Geography, Economics, Anthropology, History, Statistics, Social Work and Information Science. It includes recipients of prestigious academic awards and scholars with a wide range of interests whose writings continue to appear in a large number of Indian and foreign journals and books. The group possesses varied areas of specializations including scientific methods of enquiry, studies on tribals, dalits and minority groups, ethnographic enquiries, sects and religion, rural transformation, social conflicts, movements and riots, urbanization and development, urban and regional planning, literature and social consciousness, human resource development (education, health), coastal studies, environment and social impact assessment of projects etc. Some members of the faculty are on various governmental and non‑governmental advisory committees and boards at local, state and national levels. Apart from team work among themselves, the faculty also collaborates with scholars at other institutions and universities in India and abroad. Needed expertise in areas related to Engineering, Architecture, Medicine, Law, Ecology, etc. is also drawn from scholars associated with the Centre in various ways. The Centre for Social Studies is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 (Registration No. Gujarat/314/SURAT) and Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950 (Registration No. F‑235/SURAT). The Centre is also a recognized research institution of the Government of India (the Ministry of Science and Technology).
